Secret Life of The American Teenager, is a new show on ABC Family which debuted last week to an opening sequence where a wholesome girl comes home and takes a pregnancy test to find out she is pregnant. While this may sound like yet another awful show that makes sex look like no big deal and makes a mockery out of traditional values it is quiet the opposite. At first when I saw the promos for this new show on ABC Family, my gut reaction was this will be trashy and have no place on a "family channel" but when I saw that the creators of 7th Heaven were behind it and John Schneider of Dukes of Hazard fame was on it I new it might just be a quality show after all.
So last week I sat down to watch it's premier and I was surprised to see not only a traditional message being offered, but Christians and Christianity was actually discussed and presented in a fair light. While the first episode put on the Christianity angle a little to strong at first, it seems that in the second episode which aired tonight kept a better balance and may just have a chance to not only survive but thrive. It does not push an immoral agenda like many teen shows today do. It is a fast paced teen drama, that is well produced and real. While the teens might find "real" parents will find many teachable moments, and know even if they're not in the room it will be a safe choice for teenagers to watch.
The storyline focuses on Amy who is a shy 15 year old girl who never had a boyfriend before and is rather clean cut makes a decision at band camp to sleep with a boy, which she later regrets. She tells her friends that is was not cool or fun it not like they show it in the movies. It turns out the boy she liked isn't what she had hoped, he is a self absorbed drummer who is a classic "player" type. When she finds another boyfriend who is honest and clean cut, she struggles with her past and how to move on. Other characters are in the show include other teens and their various issues dealing with growing up, and sex. On one side is a typical sex is no big deal couple on the other is a Christian couple who struggle with making the right choice. So teens and families plan to spend Tuesday nights at 7pm CT watching "The Secret Life of the American Teen" on ABC Family. Trust me it is not a boring church movie, nor is it a racy anything goes program.

ALSO: Check out on DVD John Schneider's movie "Collier And Company" which was a responce to the distastful "Dukes Of Hazard" movie. In this movie which John wrote while he was staring in the "Dukes Of Hazard" show, is about a man who is getting divorced and is running a racing scam on wealthy car owners and trying to make a good impression on his teenage daughter who is quickly following in his footsteps.
It is a great family movie with a great message. Be sure to check out the website for information on the upcoming "Collier And Company 2" movie at:
